Crypto Staking Platforms Compared: Custodial vs DeFi

Edge Staking compares four kinds of crypto staking and yield opportunities for 12 popular assets. Here is how they differ.

Mode How you earn Main risk
Custodial staking Centralized exchanges and platforms manage the assets for you. Platforms compared: Binance, OKX, Bitget, HTX, KuCoin, MEXC, Bitstamp and Bitfinex. Platform risk: you rely on the platform's solvency, security and withdrawal policies.
DeFi staking Rewards generated through decentralized staking protocols, loaded from DeFiLlama yield data. Smart contract and protocol risk.
Lending Your asset is supplied to a decentralized lending market and earns a variable supply APY. Smart contract and market risk; the APY is variable.
Liquidity pool Your asset is supplied to a decentralized liquidity pool. Impermanent loss on top of protocol risk.

APY, TVL and profit figures are snapshots shown for comparison, not guarantees. To go deeper, read APY vs APR in Crypto Staking, Custodial vs DeFi Staking and Liquid Staking Explained.

How to read the results
  • Custodial — opportunities are provided by centralized exchanges or platforms that manage the deposited assets.
  • DeFi Staking — rewards generated through compatible decentralized staking protocols.
  • Lending — your asset is supplied to a decentralized lending market and earns a variable supply APY.
  • Liquidity Pool — your asset is supplied to a decentralized liquidity pool. LP positions can involve impermanent loss.
  • APY values are snapshots and can change. DeFi yields can move significantly and may include variable token incentives.
FAQ

What is the difference between Custodial and DeFi staking?

Custodial opportunities are offered by centralized exchanges and platforms where the platform manages the assets. DeFi opportunities use decentralized protocols and smart contracts. Edge Staking's DeFi mode can include staking, lending and liquidity pool opportunities.

Are DeFi APY rates live?

DeFi opportunities are loaded from DeFiLlama's yield data source. APY and TVL values are dynamic and can change at any time. Always verify the current conditions on the underlying protocol before depositing funds.

Does Edge Staking include lending and liquidity pools?

Yes. To provide a broader view of DeFi opportunities, Edge Staking includes compatible lending markets and liquidity pools in addition to eligible staking opportunities. Each result is clearly labelled according to its strategy.

Are DeFi opportunities risk-free?

No. DeFi involves smart contract risk, protocol risk and market risk. Liquidity pools can additionally expose users to impermanent loss. APYs are variable and are not guaranteed.

Which assets are supported?

Edge Staking currently supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB, USDT, USDC, Cardano, Avalanche, Polkadot, Cosmos, NEAR and Sui.

Are the APY and profit figures shown here final?

No — every APY, TVL and estimated profit figure is provided by the platform or protocol and shown for comparison purposes only, not as a locked-in guarantee. Rates can change between when you check Edge Staking and when you actually deposit, so always verify the current conditions directly on the platform or protocol before committing funds.

What's the difference between APY and APR in crypto staking?

APR (Annual Percentage Rate) reflects simple interest earned over a year, with no compounding. APY (Annual Percentage Yield) factors in compounding, so rewards are reinvested and can earn further rewards over the period. Edge Staking shows APY-style figures where the platform provides them, which typically look higher than a flat APR for the same underlying rate.

What's the difference between liquid staking and traditional staking?

Traditional staking deposits your asset directly with a platform or protocol, where it's typically locked for a period and can't be used elsewhere while staked. Liquid staking issues you a derivative token representing your staked position, which you can still trade, use as collateral, or deploy in other DeFi protocols while it keeps earning staking rewards.

Are there crypto earn options with no lockup?

Yes — some custodial and DeFi opportunities let you withdraw at any time with no fixed lockup period, though rates can be lower than fixed-term or locked alternatives. Flexibility often comes with a trade-off in yield, and some "flexible" products still apply a short unstaking delay, so check each platform's terms before depositing.
